The Championship 18, designed by renowned golf course architect Richard Mandell, features open fairways, six tee boxes for players of every ability, advanced bunker designs, superior drainage for inclement weather and spectacular views. It is the first new public 18-hole course in the state in more than a decade. “It’s going to be a fun course for all ages and abilities,” said Braemar Golf Course General Manager Joe Abood. “It will be the premier public golf course in Minnesota.” Events begin Wednesday, May 15, with a VIP and media day. At 11:30 a.m., the inaugural call to the first tee will take place, followed by a ceremonial first drive with Mayor James Hovland and Edina City Council members. Mandell will take part in the opening ceremonies. A shotgun start of VIPs begins at noon. Members of Braemar’s men’s and women’s leagues will have a chance to play the course during a special preview day Thursday, May 16. The First FORE, the inaugural tournament for the Championship 18, begins at 1 p.m. Friday, May 17. The 144 slots sold out in 90 minutes. Tickets are still available for the First FORE After-Party, an all-ages celebration that includes dinner, lawn games and live music starting at 6 p.m. Friday, May 17, on the Braemar Courtyard next to the clubhouse, 6364 John Harris Drive. The first public day on the course is Saturday, May 18. The Championship 18 is the last piece of a $7.5 million renovation at Braemar Golf Course that also included new putting and chipping practice areas, remodeled pro shop and the new outdoor Braemar Courtyard for games and events. Combined with the Academy 9 Par 3 course, outdoor driving range, Red River Kitchen restaurant and Braemar Golf Dome, Braemar Golf Course is now a complete year-round destination for golfers.
