The President’s Award of Excellence is a new award this year that recognizes exceptional coaches in all disciplines for their positive contributions to the sport of figure skating. Gazich is just one of four nominees in the seven-state Upper Great Lakes region of the PSA. “It’s a total surprise. I have no idea who nominated me,” said Gazich, who only learned of the nomination when she went to cast her ballot for the PSA’s various awards and saw her own name listed. “It is great to get the recognition.” The winners in each region will be announced May 22 in Palm Springs, California, during the organization’s annual conference. Gazich, a successful figure skater, began coaching as a side job while in college. She has performed with Stars on Ice and in other shows and taught countless skaters, from figure skaters to hockey players. “I started skating here at Braemar when I was like 4 years old, and I’ve been here my whole life” she said. “I’m happiest when I’m on ice.” Braemar Arena Skate School offers instruction for ages 3 to adult, from the beginning skater to champion figure skaters and hockey players.
