The annual neighborhood get-together held the first Tuesday evening in August was created to promote neighborhood spirit, increase awareness in crime prevention and build a stronger partnership between residents of the community and first responders. This is a great opportunity to get to know neighbors and the community’s first responders. Last year, 100 Night to Unite block parties were registered with the City of Edina. “Edina’s block parties for this event are extremely successful and well attended,” said Police Sgt. Dave Venne. “The Police Department already has a strong relationship established with residents in the community from other events such as Pizza with Police and Family Fun Nights, but this is another great way to connect with residents.” The Police Department assigns patrol officers to City-recognized neighborhoods. The addition of four of them, called Neighborhood Engagement Officers, means they will be able to attend a lot more parties. Block party organizers can request a free visit by a police car, fire truck, ambulance, Animal Control, Sparky, K-9 Officer or Bike Patrol Officer. Although the additional officers will help, resources are limited because of the large number of neighborhoods taking part in the event, so register early to request a visitor. Registration is open for block party applications, and the deadline to register is Wednesday, July 31.
