Together, Kevin H. Komadina and Joel Carter have garnered extensive experience in the care and healing of patients suffering from illness, disease and trauma. They parlay that knowledgeable introspection into creative works of art that exude the essence of healing in their joint exhibition, “Finding Beauty: Art & Healing.” As a critical care physician, Komadina witnessed the struggle of life and death and the profound effect it had on the friends and families of patients. “I was privileged to witness the power of human touch, love and compassion in the healing of patients, and the comforting of families,” he states. When his own medical issues required him to retire from practice, he sought new purpose and balance in his life and began to focus more intensely on painting. In his thoughtful work, he strives to capture the essence of the human experience using varied angles, “reminding us that there is always a different way of looking at the world.” Carter is a skilled palliative care specialist, author and artist with a gift for storytelling. He uses art and the power of storytelling as an approach to health, healing and a purposeful life, often touching on the complex issues of life and death and how to navigate through them with grace. His striking rock structures bring together balance and beauty amidst broken rock shards, effectively illustrating how real life reflects nature. Working through the broken fragments of life is a necessary part of the healing process, he emphasizes, “There are no shortcuts in the pursuit of hope and meaning.” The exhibit is on display in the Margaret Foss Gallery through Sept. 18, with a reception to be held 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15. Admission to the galleries and parking is free. The Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St., is open 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday.
