Student Alex Wyatt designed the piece, “School of Fish,” in a sculpture contest earlier this year and The Miigan Studio will bring it to life. Eighty elementary students in the Edina school district participated in the student sculpture competition to create a 3-D sculpture that represents what “Better Together” means to them. Edina Public Schools art teacher Shannon Steven worked with educators in Edina to present lessons to students on public art within the theme for the contest. “The student developed this piece with the idea that we are better together when we work together, much like when fish school together. His idea was that he would like it to be somewhere near water,” said Edina Art Center General Manager Susan Tarnowski. “The artist we selected to develop the public art sculpture really took this concept to another level. They noted that fish that shoaled, or stay together for social reasons, rather than fish that school, or just swim in the same direction, are healthier. In other words, diverse fish are healthy fish.” BetterTogetherEdina.org is the City’s online public engagement tool and the term “Better Together” represents efforts to make the City more accessible and inclusive to more members of the community. The student submissions were evaluated by 11 judges comprised of Commissioners, Edina Public Schools art teachers and representatives from the Edina Community Foundation. The finished piece will include aspects of patinaed copper and slumped glass. It is expected to be installed in Centennial Lakes Park in the fall.
