City of Edina to Host Blood Drive Feb. 21
Edina, Minn., Feb. 3, 2020 – The City of Edina will host a blood drive for Memorial Blood Centers 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 21, at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. The drive is open to
the public, but time slots are limited.
The Edina Police Department won Memorial Blood Centers’ Battle of the Badges Blood Drive last fall, beating out several other communities’ police and fire departments, making it the
third time it has secured the prestigious honor. (It also earned that distinction in 2012 and 2013, and was recognized as Rookie of the Year in 2011.)
Sgt. Kevin Rofidal has helped coordinate the blood drives at Edina City Hall for eight years and hopes to see public involvement continue to grow—not only for the incredible impact it
has on a crucial commodity that is a gift of life for many; his passion has taken on a more personal note in recent years.
“Having been a blood-drive volunteer for years, I never thought it would be me who needed blood, but that was the case during cancer treatments three years ago. I received the gift of
life through blood transfusions and will be forever grateful,” said Rofidal. “This is a unique way for the average person to make a difference.”
This blood drive will also collect double red cell donations through a process called apheresis. This process collects two units of red blood cells during a single donation. Donors who
are O+, O-, A-, B- are in highest demand.
Anyone who donates blood to Memorial Blood Centers will be entered to win a pair of tickets to an upcoming Timberwolves game, and also a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card and a pair
of tickets to the March 30 Timberwolves-Los Angeles Lakers game.
Those with pre-existing medical conditions like uncontrolled hypertension; a recent history of cancer, leukemia or lymphoma; or those who have hepatitis, HIV or AIDS may not be able
to donate. Other restrictions can include those who take blood thinners, anti-platelet agents or other medications.
Memorial Blood Centers ask people donating to eat a full meal at least six hours before donating, get a full night’s sleep and drink a minimum 16 ounces of water the day of donating.
