The Edina Public Art Committee (EPAC) was convened in April of 2004 for the purpose of
promoting and enhancing the aesthetic quality of life in Edina through the enjoyment of art in the
City's public places. EPAC serves in an advisory capacity to the City in all public art- related
matters.
Whereas public art in Edina can:
-build awareness and pride in community heritage and identity
-serve as a public education tool
- promote economic development
- encourage cooperation between public and private sectors, City government, and the arts
community
- nurture the creative environment and encourage artistic endeavors in the community;
and
Edina residents value their exceptionally high quality of life where arts and culture play a pivotal
role;
and
Edina residents have responded very positively to EPAC's public art endeavors ( "Raven" at City
Hall voted best public art piece in 2008, 200+ attended dedications of "Pinecone" and sculpture
exhibit at Edina Promenade, 650+ visitors have voted thus far for their favorite sculpture in the
Promenade);
Now therefore be it resolved that the City grant a sum of $10,000 to EPAC in 2010 for the
purposes of-
-offering stipends of $500 each to the sculptors whose pieces have been selected for
exhibit at the Promenade and Grandview Square sites in 2010 -11 (13 sculptors x $500=
$6,500);
- awarding sculptor honoraria for Peoples' Choice ($1,000), 2nd Place ($750) and
Honorable Mention ($500) for pieces at the Promenade and Grandview Square sites
($2250)
- establishing a pool of funds to serve as an enticement to individuals and organizations
to match resources for the purchase of one or more pieces or art;
-cover basic operational costs such as paper, printing, and postage for RFQ's (Request for
Qualifications) sent to artists as well as EPAC project promotional materials and
donation requests distributed to residents and local business ($1,000)
The Edina Public Art Committee continues to actively seek donations from Edina residents and
businesses to purchase the 2009 Peoples' Choice recipient (as a result of the balloting process for
sculptures exhibited at the Promenade and Grandview Square) for permanent display at the
Promenade. Balloting closes September 30th, 2009. Thus far the clear frontrunner is "Gyr
Family" priced at $40,000 for the suite of three pieces.
Thank you for your consideration,
The Edina Public Art Committee
