FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City Kicks Off Environmental Film Series With ‘Chasing Ice’
Edina, Minn., Jan. 9, 2013 – The Edina Energy & Environment Commission will debut an environmental film
series with a presentation of the award-winning documentary “Chasing Ice.”
As part of the environmental film series, the Energy & Environment Commission will show a film every-other
month, focusing on environmental concerns currently facing society.
“Chasing Ice” will be shown for free at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17, followed by a discussion on climate change in the
Council Chambers of Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. Preceding the showing, attendees can meet members
of the Energy & Environment Commission at 6:30 p.m.
In the spring of 2005, acclaimed environmental photographer James Balog headed to the Arctic on assignment
for National Geographic: to capture images of the receding glaciers. Balog, a former skeptic of climate change,
set himself on a mission to gather undeniable evidence of climate change with the use of his camera.
Balog’s hauntingly beautiful video compresses years of stills into seconds and captures ancient mountains of
ice in motion as they disappear at a breathtaking rate. It is the recipient of dozens of awards, including the
2012 Sundance Film Festival Excellence in Cinematography Award: U.S. Documentary.
“‘Chasing Ice’ is a dramatic representation of the speed at which climate change is happening,” said Paul
Thompson, Energy & Environment Commissioner. “Climate change is about extreme weather events. This
film tells an incredible story about the future of our climate.”
