In 2013, Minnetonka High School figure skater Sage Kelner was named to the 2013 U.S. Figure Skating Scholastic Honors Team. Kelner was awarded $1,000 for a charity of her choice. She chose to develop an adaptive recreation skating program for disabled youth called the DREAM Skating Program for her home skating club and rink, Braemar-City of Lakes Figure Skating Club at Braemar Arena in Edina. The vision of the DREAM Skating Program is to change lives through skating, giving participants a chance to experience joy, self- esteem and confidence through skating, all while becoming physically fit. “This is a very unique program,” said Recreation Supervisor Kristin Aarsvold. “We’re so excited to be able to give these youth a chance to appreciate skating in their own way.” The program will be offered in the spring and is open to skaters of all abilities ages 5 to 15. The class will encourage skaters of all abilities to have fun while learning to skate at their own pace. The program will be led by certified coaches and supported with a volunteer for each participant. No skating experience is needed; a hockey helmet is required. The class will be offered on April 13, 27; May 4, 11, 18 and June 1 from 5 to 5:50 p.m. at Braemar Arena, 7501 Ikola Way. The class fee is $150.
