FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City of Edina To Plant Trees in Honor of Arbor Day
Edina, Minn., April 17, 2014 – On Friday, April 25, the City of Edina will celebrate Arbor Day. To
commemorate this important date, the City of Edina’s “Tree Crew” will plant several trees in Garden Park,
located at located on the corner of Vernon Avenue and Hansen Road in northwest Edina. The trees will be
planted at 10 a.m. on the east side of the shelter building.
The public is invited to attend to observe or assist with the plantings. City Forester Tom Horwath will be on
site to help with the planting and will be available to discuss any questions or concerns. Horwath plans on
planting three elm trees that will also be resistant to Dutch-Elm Disease, a fatal disease affecting American
elms.
Horwath urges all of the public to take special note this Arbor Day. “For those who are unable to plant a tree
to celebrate Arbor Day, take a moment to observe the welcoming beauty of the trees as they once again
unfurl their spring foliage and be thankful for all they have to offer us,” said Horwath. “After this long winter,
it is truly a welcome ‘re-leaf!’”
Tree planting and proper care of existing trees is important in so many diverse ways for the environment.
Aesthetically and functionally, the benefit list is long. Horwath encourages the community to plant trees
whenever possible, not just on Arbor Day.
In the event of inclement weather, the Arbor Day plantings will be rescheduled.
