Edina City Council Proclaims April 22 as Earth Day in Edina
Edina, Minn., April 3, 2014 – The Edina City Council recently proclaimed Tuesday, April 22 as “Earth Day
2014.” The Earth Day proclamation was read by Mayor Jim Hovland at the April 1 City Council meeting.
As part of the Earth Day celebration, the City’s Energy & Environment Commission (EEC) encourages
residents to commit to learning more about the environment and how to help protect it by taking action.
The EEC recommends residents celebrate Earth Day locally by doing the following:
Save energy, money and the environment by taking the Edina Energy Challenge and scheduling a visit
by the Home Energy Squad.
Sign up for Windsource through Xcel Energy to reduce greenhouse gases by supporting renewable
energy.
Reduce, reuse and recycle. Replace disposable plastic bottles with a reusable water bottle.
Plant trees. Grow your own vegetables.
Drive less by combining trips, walking and biking. Cut exhaust emissions by reducing engine idling.
Use organic fertilizers. Mulch grass clippings.
Turn off lights and electronics when not in use. Adjust your thermostat; set it to a warmer
temperature in the summer and a cooler temperature in the winter. Install CFL or LED light bulbs
and buy Energy Star appliances.
Shop for produce at the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market from 3-7 p.m. Thursdays June 12-Sept. 25.
Be a water-smart consumer. Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. Follow best practices
in watering and mowing lawns.
Attend the Edina Dialogue “What Will Turn You on in 2030? Powering Our Energy Future” event
featuring the Executive Director of Fresh Energy, Michael Noble. The event will be held at 7 p.m.
April 28 in the South View Middle School Auditorium.
