Edina City Council Proclaims May as Preservation Month in Edina
Edina, Minn., May 15, 2014 – The Edina City Council on May 20 will proclaim May as “Preservation
Month.” The Preservation Month proclamation will be read by Mayor Jim Hovland and celebrates the role of
history in our lives and the contributions made by dedicated individuals in helping to preserve the tangible
aspects of the heritage that has shaped us as a people.
The proclamation will assert the significance of preservation to manage growth and sustain development,
revitalize neighborhoods, foster local pride and maintain community character while enhancing livability. The
Edina Heritage Preservation Board (HPB) is co-sponsoring Preservation Month with the National Trust for
Historic Preservation.
“The theme for 2014 Preservation Month, “New Age of Preservation: Embark, Inspire, Engage!” provides an
excellent opportunity for [the Edina community] to reflect on the historic fabric of our community, knowing
that an appreciation of our past adds vibrancy as we plan for the future,” explained Senior Planner Joyce
Repya and Staff Liaison to the HPB.
In recognition of Preservation month, the HPB encourages residents to attend Edina Historical Society’s
“Edina on the Map” exhibit where they can explore how Edina’s neighborhoods grew and changed through
the years. The exhibit is free and open to the public during regular museum hours: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 10
a.m. to noon Saturdays.
