FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Come Outside for National Kids to Parks Day in Edina May 17
Edina, Minn., April 30, 2013 – To celebrate National Kids to Parks Day, the City of Edina will host
outdoor activities at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St., 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 17.
“Our goal is to pull kids away from screens,” said Recreation Supervisor Kristin Aarsvold. “We want to get
families active together and perhaps introduce people to a new activity they can enjoy in our parks.”
At the event, discover all that Edina and regional parks have to offer. Families can see chickens and other live
animals; take a digital camera art challenge; take a historical artifact challenge with a costumed interpreter; try
archery and slacklining; learn about biking, camping and healthy snacks; purchase bike helmets; learn about
fishing and fish off the pier of Lake Cornelia; play SNAG golf; and try a Frisbee play shop. The event is free and
will be held rain or shine.
The City joins more than 330 cities across the country in celebrating National Kids to Parks Day. Hundreds of
thousands of children nationwide will take part in the movement and discover America’s parks through
outdoor activity.
In late-April, the Edina City Council proclaimed May 17 “National Kids to Parks Day in Edina,” and
encouraged everyone in the community to participate by spending time in Edina’s Parks and attending
National Kids to Park Day events May 17. National Kids to Parks Day is a way to encourage families to spend
as much time as they can enjoying the outdoors at local parks.
According to the National Park Trust, park attendance has decreased over the last several decades. National
Kids to Parks Day is a way to introduce a new generation to the nation’s parks, and to encourage children to
lead a more active lifestyle to combat health issues such as childhood obesity, diabetes, hypertension and
hypercholesterolemia.
Edina’s National Kids to Parks day is co-sponsored by Three Rivers Park District, Fairview Southdale Hospital,
Hoigaard’s and Cool Planet.
