FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina’s Independence Day Celebration To Honor the Red, White
and Blue with a Parade
Edina, Minn., June 19, 2014 – Edina will mark Independence Day with a Fourth of July parade, concert and
fireworks. The parade begins at 10 a.m. behind Edina City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St. Music and fireworks will be
held at Rosland Park, 4300 W. 66th St., beginning at 8:30 p.m.
“It’s one of our largest community events; it brings out neighbors of all ages to celebrate Independence Day,”
said Edina Community Foundation Parade Planning Committee Member Marsha Buchok. “Its’ a terrific way to
be patriotic and support your community and it’s just a lot of fun.”
The 2014 parade is organized by the Edina Community Foundation with support from the City of Edina. This
year’s theme is “a salute to Edina’s volunteers.” The hour-long parade will feature marching bands, clowns,
floats, veterans, dogs and more.
The 2014 theme stemmed from a desire to expand the roster of grand marshals to more deserving people.
“The grand marshal sits in a place of honor toward the head of the parade. It’s a great way to recognize
outstanding achievement, but it only goes to one or two people a year,” explained John Swon, Chair of the
Parade Planning Committee.
In the spirit of recognizing volunteers, civic groups and nonprofits, the parade will honor four grand marshals
in total. The Edina Chamber of Commerce, Edina Federated Women’s Club, Edina Lion’s Club, and Rotary
Club of Edina will all nominate a grand marshal from their ranks.
The parade begins behind Edina City Hall at Eden Avenue and Willson Road (just east of Minnesota Highway
100) and proceeds one mile east on 50th Street to the U.S. Bank parking lot at Halifax Avenue. Presenting
sponsors are Lunds/Byerly’s and U.S. Bank.
Organizers recommend spectators arrive early, since an estimated 20,000 people will attend the parade. The
parade will also be broadcast live on Edina Channels 16 and 813 and will be air throughout the month.
As is tradition, the First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band will perform the evening of July 4th before the sky
lights up. The music begins at 8:30 p.m. and fireworks, sponsored by Fairview Southdale Hospital, begin at 10
p.m. The First John Philip Sousa Memorial Band has been playing at the Fourth of July celebration at Rosland
Park before the fireworks since 1970.
Volunteers are still needed to help the day of the event. Please email info@edinaparade.org if you are
interested. For more information regarding parade sponsorships, the parade route, parking or veteran
participation, visit www.edinaparade.org.
