Edina Recognized for Effective Use of Legacy Funding
Edina, Minn., June 5, 2014 – Minnesota Citizens for the Arts and Conservation Minnesota recently
presented the City of Edina with a Legacy Destination Award. The award recognizes Edina for its effective use
of Legacy funds to make the community a better place.
Legacy funds were made available in the State of Minnesota after voters overwhelmingly approved the Clean
Water, Land and Legacy Amendment in 2008. The amendment added 3/8 of 1 percent to the State’s sales tax
and dedicated the revenue to projects that would help preserve the State’s arts and outdoors legacy.
Minnesota Citizens for the Arts Executive Director Sheila Smith presented the award to the City Council on
June 3. “The citizens and nonprofits of Edina have been extremely successful in accessing legacy funds for the
benefit of your city,” she said. “Be it implementation of a source water protection plan or the … variety shows
in Edinborough Park, Edina is really benefitting from the passage of this amendment.”
Edina has been granted seven arts and cultural heritage grants for a variety of groups. Those include:
Edina Singing Seniors
The Givens Foundation for African American Literature (2)
Patrick Dewane’s tour of “The Accidental Hero”
Music Association of Minnetonka
Bloomington Community Education
Indonesian Performing Arts Association
The Givens Foundation received two separate grants, one in July 2013 and another in November 2013. The
Music Association of Minnetonka grant supported concerts Colonial Church of Edina for youth. It aims to build
familiarity with instruments. The grant to Bloomington Community Education funded two variety shows at
Edina’s Edinborough Park that featured adults with disabilities.
“Legacy dollars are going to projects that protect and enhance the outdoors and the waters in your area,”
explained Conservation Minnesota’s Executive Director Paul Austin. “These investments, we believe, will help
preserve the past, highlight the present and keep Edina’s legacy going strong into the future.”
Edina has been granted funding for three outdoor legacy projects, including:
Source Water Protection Plan Implementation Grant
Nine Mile Creek Stabilization and Habitat Restoration
Stabilization of Basset Creek
