City of Edina Police Department Hires New Officers
Edina, Minn., July 3, 2014 – Michael Bengtson and Kevin Medzis were recently hired as the Edina Police
Department’s newest officers.
Bengtson began work as a Police Officer on Monday, June 23 and Medzis began work on Tuesday, June 24.
The oath was administered Tuesday, July 1 in the Council Chambers of Edina City Hall. Bengtson will have his
badge, No. 139 pinned on by his father, Gary Bengtson. Medzis plans to have his mother, Jean Medzis pin on
his badge, No. 140.
For Bengtson, becoming a Police Officer was in his blood. His father, grandfather, brother and uncle all serve
in Police Departments.
Bengtson obtained his associate’s degree in Law Enforcement from Alexandria Technical College after
growing up in Carver, MN. Most recently, he worked as a Patrol Deputy for the Carver County Sheriff’s
Office.
“[This position] will be busier … there’s more going on [in Edina], but it still has that hometown feel,” said
Bengtson. “[I’m looking forward to] getting out there and being part of the community.”
Medzis, originally from Richfield, already has a stake in Edina – his father, Andrew, is a Fire Inspector for the
City.
“I like [Edina] … I got to know the community because of my dad’s work here,” he said.
Medzis holds a bachelor’s degree from Metropolitan State University with a major in Law Enforcement and
Criminal Justice. He is an eight-year veteran of the Army and served one tour in Iraq from 2009-2010. Medzis
has been working as a Community Service Officer for the Metro Transit Police Department.
“I’m looking forward to helping people and being able to build positive relationships within the community,”
Medzis noted.
