Edina Water Quality Working Group Calls for Volunteers
Edina, Minn., August 21, 2014 – The City of Edina Energy & Environment Commission’s Water Quality
Working Group (WQWG) is looking for volunteers to participate in a storm drain stenciling program.
“Everything that falls on our streets and into the storm gutters ends up in our creeks, ponds and lakes. This
includes pollutants like oil from our cars, road salt and garbage,” explained WQWG member Louise Waddick.
“This also often includes leaves and grass clippings, which are some of the biggest pollutants to waters. Although
they seem natural, leaves and grass add excess nutrients to the creeks and lakes.”
Fertilizers, pesticides, pet waste, erosion, leaves and grass clippings are the leading pollutants to the waters. To
help reduce the amount of pollutants entering waterways, the group is seeking involvement from volunteers,
community service groups and clubs.
“These stencils let others know that what goes in our storm drains ends up in the water systems. This is a
perfect activity for Boy and Girl Scout troops, neighborhood associations, garden clubs, church youth groups,
and you,” said Waddick.
To participate in the program, a stenciling kit can be reserved through the City of Edina Engineering
Department. The stencils on the drains notify nearby residents, “Keep it Clean, Drains to Creek.” For more
information, or to reserve a kit, contact Water Resources Coordinator Laura Adler at 952-826-0445 or
LAdler@EdinaMN.gov.
