FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina Receives 2014-2015 Distinguished Budget Presentation Award
Edina, Minn., Aug. 21, 2014 – The City of Edina’s Finance Department was recently awarded the 2014-2015
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award. The award is presented by the Government Finance Officers
Association (GFOA) and recognizes the City’s ability to prepare high-quality budget documents that reflect both
the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and GFOA’s best
practices.
GFOA represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada. Submissions for the
Distinguished Budget Presentation Award were reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff
and the GFOA Special Review Committee, which includes individuals with expertise in public sector financial
reporting and financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics and other finance professionals.
“The document is intended for a lot of different types of people with varying degrees of interest and
background to understand the City of Edina’s finances,” explained Assistant Finance Director Eric Roggeman.
“What you don’t want is a document that’s really thick and overwhelming. You need to be a little bit
approachable and also hit all these categories that are mandatory disclosures.”
Cities from around the country submit their budget in the hopes to be given a Distinguished Budget Award. In
previous years, only around 30 Minnesota cities have been granted this award.
“The budget process is an important thing for the City because it really spells out our priorities for the year …
and the budget document is important because it conveys that message,” explained Roggeman.
This was Edina’s first time submitting the budget document for the award. The City has received a Certificate of
Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the GFOA since 2006. Roggeman plans on submitting
the budget document for the award in future years and hopes to continually improve the document through the
feedback garnered through the award experience.
