Dear Emily,
It was good to visit with you and Robert Vogel last month about the possibility of designating Edina
Morningside Community Church as an Edina Heritage Landmark. We’re grateful for the consideration as
we continue to serve the broader community as well as our own members.
After our conversation, the church’s Board of Trustees considered the invitation as well. Our
deliberations included questions about what would be included in the plan of treatment, as well as any
possible implications for future rehabilitation to the building. We’re glad to know of the public education
aspects of the designation, and see this as an opportunity to keep telling the story of Edina Morningside
Church’s century-plus (and ongoing) efforts to convene community in the neighborhood for the good of
all.
In light of these possible outcomes, the Board of Trustees requests that the city move forward to develop
a plan of treatment, and (presuming this is acceptable to all parties) the eventual consideration by the
City Council of an Edina Heritage Landmark designation. I therefore request that the city proceed to
develop the case for such a designation, and draft a plan of treatment which we can look at in the coming
weeks. Church Historian Doug Fuerst will be your ongoing contact as the work proceeds, but please let
me know if you need more information which Doug cannot provide. We’re grateful for the consideration!
Sincerely,
Oby Ballinger

Archeology in Edina. The HPC worked with Nienow Cultural Consultants in
2019 on a Phase Ia Archeology report that models areas of different degrees
of potential archeological sites in Edina. The HPC proposes in 2020, to apply
for a CLG grant (similar to the one in 2019) to test the archeolgocial model.
