Mayor Declares Local Peace Time Emergency
Edina, Minn., March 16, 2020 – Edina Mayor Jim Hovland has declared a local peace time emergency due to COVID-19. The declaration invokes the City’s disaster plan and authorizes other
appropriate community containment and mitigation strategies.
The Local Peace Time Emergency Due to COVID-19 Health Pandemic is effective noon Monday, March 16. It is effective for three days, but will likely be extended by the City Council at
its meeting March 17.
“I would like to point out that there is a greatly important distinction between preparation and panic,” said Hovland in a letter to the community. “We prepare for emergencies so that
we do not panic during them and that is what we should all be doing in Edina. We are preparing as a community to deal with this attack on our health from an invisible enemy with continued
up-to-the-minute education and commitment, working to protect the health of our residents. While there will undoubtedly be impact on some of our neighbors, family and friends before
we are clear of the problems posed to our health by COVID-19, I am confident Edinans, working together, will emerge from this pandemic much stronger as a community.”
