City Seeks Feedback on Historic Bridge Replacement
Edina, Minn., Dec. 1, 2022 – The City is collecting community feedback on the idea of replacing the historic Wooddale Avenue Bridge over Minnehaha Creek.
The bridge is historically significant because it was built in 1937 as part of the federal Works Progress Administration, which provided the labor with the City providing the engineering
and materials. The Wooddale Avenue Bridge has not only achieved local designation as an Edina Heritage Landmark property, but is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The bridge was constructed with limestone, a relatively weak building material. The masonry railings and corrugated metal arch are deteriorating. The height and strength of the railings
do not meet current standards and the narrow deck is inadequate to safely accommodate pedestrians and bicycles.
Staff is consulting with the State Historic Preservation Office on the replacement, but also wants to hear from residents. Residents are encouraged to ask questions and provide comments
online at BetterTogetherEdina.org/wooddale-avenue-bridge-project before Jan. 10.
