Edina Fire Department Snuffs Fire in Morningside Area of Edina
Edina, Minn., Jan. 5, 2013 – An overnight fire in the 4200 block of West 44th Street damaged a garage and
home in Edina.
At approximately 12:15 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 5, the Edina Fire Department was summoned to the home on a
report of a fire in the garage. Officers first to the scene noted smoke coming from the garage and confirmed a
fire in the structure. Residents were home at the time of the fire and evacuated without injury.
When Edina Fire crews arrived, two alarms were called, requesting mutual aid from Eden Prairie, Richfield, St.
Louis Park and Hennepin County EMS. Xcel Energy and Centerpoint Energy were also on scene to cut utilities
as a precaution.
Most of the damage occurred in the attached garage, but fire damage extended into the walls of the first and
second floors. According to a preliminary report, ashes from a fireplace may have caused the fire; however, the
official cause is pending further investigation.
“Proper disposal of ashes after using a fireplace is crucial,” said Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “Once the ashes are cool,
they should be disposed of in a metal canister away from the home. Ashes and embers can retain heat for
several hours, even after extinguishing a fire.”
