Kitchen Fire Damages Edina Apartment Unit
Edina, Minn., Feb. 17, 2013 – The Edina Fire Department responded to a kitchen fire in an Edina apartment
building tonight.
At approximately 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, the Edina Fire Department was summoned to the 5200 block of
Vernon Avenue South on reports of a fire in an apartment unit. A first alarm was called, requesting mutual aid
from Richfield, St. Louis Park and Hennepin County EMS.
When fire crews arrived, they found the fire on the stovetop in a first-floor unit had been extinguished by the
building’s sprinkler system. One unit suffered fire and smoke damage while four others have water damage from
the sprinklers. Two residents of the 146-unit building were transported a hospital for smoke inhalation.
“The building’s sprinklers saved countless lives and property,” said Assistant Fire Chief Darrell Todd. “This really
shows the impact sprinklers have on fires by keeping it from spreading to other units. Had the building not been
sprinkled, the fire could have spread quickly, endangering lives.”
Residents were able to return to their units after the all-clear was given. The exact cause of the fire is under
investigation.
