FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina Officer and Sergeant receive internal recognition
Edina, Minn., May 29, 2013 – Police Officer David Boosalis and Sgt. Dan Conboy will receive the Edina
Police Department’s internal Departmental Commendation Award at a City Council meeting this summer for
the officers’ exceptional service during a duplex fire last September.
Boosalis was the first to respond to the fire call on West Shore Drive. When he arrived, he saw that half of
the duplex was engulfed in flames. When Boosalis attempted to make contact with the residents of the
attached duplex, a woman came to the door and said her elderly father was still in the basement. As heavy
smoke emerged from the home, Boosalis went into the basement to help the elderly man exit the home and
bring him to the ambulance for oxygen.
“Officer Boosalis was aware of the danger and potential risks, but rather than wait for help, he chose to risk
his safety for the safety of another,” said Police Chief Jeff Long.
While Boosalis checked the other side of the duplex, Conbody approached the front door of the side on fire.
He saw a woman inside standing 15 feet from the doorway. Although he yelled to her to exit, she would not
move and was not entirely coherent. In spite of the heavy smoke and lack of protective gear, Conbody
entered the duplex and escorted her out of the home.
“Although the job of a police officer comes with inherent risks, Sgt. Conboy’s quick thinking to enter the
house and retrieve the residents from the main floor … may have saved lives,” said Long.
Departmental Commendation Awards are selected from nominations to an internal awards committee and
then referred to the Chief of Police to make the final decision.
