Mayor orders flags at half-staff in order of late
James Van Valkenburg
Edina, Minn., May 30, 2013 – Edina Mayor Jim Hovland has ordered flags on municipal property be flown
at half-staff from sunrise Friday, May 31 to sunrise Monday, June 3, in honor of the late James Van Valkenburg.
Community members are invited to lower their flags, too, in honor of Van Valkenburg, who served as Village
Trustee from 1960 to 1974 and Mayor from 1974 to 1981.
Van Valkenburg, 87, died suddenly Saturday, May 25. Services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 1, at
Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1200 Marquette Ave. S., Minneapolis. Visitation will be held one hour
before the service.
Outside of the City Council, Van Valkenburg served the community in many ways, for many decades. He was
a charter board member of the Edina Community Foundation established in 1977, was a 40-year leader of the
Edina Crime Prevention Fund and served for 27 years on the Edina Art Center Board. He was a longtime
member of the Rotary Club of Edina.
