Hundreds of thousands of children nationwide will take part in the movement to discover America’s parks through outdoor activity on Saturday, May 18, to celebrate National Park Trust’s (NPT) third-annual National Kids to Parks Day. Earlier this month, the Edina City Council proclaimed National Kids to Parks Day in Edina and encouraged everyone in the community to participate by spending time in one of Edina’s many beautiful parks. The obesity epidemic affects nearly 1 in 3 children in the United States who are either overweight or obese and communities are seeing increasing rates of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and high cholesterol levels in children. Edina and cities across the nation are echoing a simple motto: “active kids are healthy kids.” National Kids to Parks Day is way to encourage communities to spend as much time as they can enjoying the outdoors at local parks and recreation sites. “Edina is committed to healthy living. Our wonderful parks and recreation areas like Centennial Lakes and Rosland Park provide excellent spaces for outdoor play. I invite all Edina residents to join me outdoors on May 18 for National Kids to Parks Day,” said Mayor Jim Hovland. On National Kids to Parks Day, families are encouraged to find and take their photo next to the Healthy Hornet at Wooddale Park, Garden Park, Rosland Park or Centennial Lakes Park and post it to the City of Edina’s Facebook page. They can also enter the photo to the Images of Edina contest. For more information, visit www.EdinaMN.gov or call the Parks & Recreation Department, 952-826-0367. -30-
