Edina Morningside Neighborhood Home Damaged By Fire
Edina, Minn., Sept. 19, 2013 – A fire damaged a home in Edina’s Morningside Neighborhood
Thursday, Sept. 19, following midday storms.
At approximately 11:50 a.m., a neighbor reported flames from a house in the 4100 block of Kipling
Avenue, following a loud “boom” during passing thunderstorms. No one was home at the time, and a
passerby rescued a dog from the home. No other injuries were reported.
Officers reported smoke and flames showing from the roof of the home when they arrived. A second
alarm was called for the fire, bringing mutual aid from Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Richfield, St. Louis Park
and Hennepin County EMS.
A second-floor bedroom and the roof was damaged by the fire. The ceiling in the bedroom partially
collapsed. The rest of the home suffered minor to moderate smoke and water damage.
The fire was likely caused by lightning, though the official cause is pending further investigation.
“You never know when a fire might occur or where you will be,” said Edina Fire Marshal Jeff Siems.
“Residential fire sprinklers give homeowners security that a fire could be extinguished before major
damage is done.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, average property loss per fire is cut by about
70 percent in homes with sprinklers.
