FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Labor Day Weekend Fire Damages Apartment Building
Edina, Minn., Sept. 4, 2013 – No injuries were reported following a Labor Day weekend fire that
damaged an Edina apartment building.
The two-alarm fire in the 5500 block of Hansen Road was reported at 5:08 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31. An
off-duty paid-on-call firefighter noted a column of black smoke visible from Edina’s Grandview area, and
called 9-1-1 for Fire Department response.
Upon arrival, Edina Police and Fire departments reported a working structure fire with flames and
smoke seen from the roof. A resident of the apartment building activated the fire alarms prior to Fire
Department arrival. All residents of the apartment escaped safely.
“The residents of this apartment acted calmly and were able to evacuate safely,” said Edina Fire
Marshal Jeff Siems. “If a fire alarm sounds, always treat it seriously and evacuate the building.”
The fire caused moderate damage to a wooden deck on the roof, and minor damage to the structure
and attic space. The second-floor apartment received smoke damage and some water damage.
Crews from Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Richfield and St. Louis Park responded to the fire,
bringing it under control in less than one hour. The building was released back to the property owner,
and residents were allowed to return to their units.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
