FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina Police to dispatch for Richfield
Edina, Minn., Sept. 20, 2013 – The Edina City Council recently approved a four-year contract to provide
9-1-1 emergency dispatching services to the City of Richfield. The change will take place on or around Dec. 1.
Richfield currently has its own dispatch center, but it is in need of improvements. Rather than invest in new
technology, the City of Richfield decided to outsource the work.
“We look forward to working with the Richfield Police Department and matching the high level of dispatching
services Richfield residents are used to,” said Civilian Services Manager Laurene Draper, who oversees Edina’s
dispatch center.
The City of Richfield will pay all initial costs associated with the transition. Thereafter, Richfield will pay Edina
$14,058 per month through 2014. Starting in 2015, the monthly cost will be revised to $12,363 for the
remaining contracted years.
Edina currently dispatches for the City of Golden Valley, and will continue to through 2014. It is expected that
Edina’s call volume will increase by about 45,000 calls per year to approximately 125,000 combined calls per
year for all three cities.
Due to the increased call load, two full-time dispatchers will be hired to maintain minimum staffing levels.
Current Richfield dispatchers are encouraged to apply for the new positions.
