Fire Department Holds Contest For Fire Prevention Month
Edina, Minn., Oct. 1, 2013 – Get out your crayons, markers and colored pencils, kids! The Edina Fire
Department is holding a coloring contest now through Oct. 31 to celebrate Fire Prevention Month.
The contest is open to children in kindergarten through Grade 5 who live in Edina. The winner will get a ride
to or from school in one of the Edina Fire Department’s fire trucks.
The contest is held in conjunction with the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) fire prevention
campaign. This year’s theme is “Prevent Kitchen Fires.”
“Cooking is the leading cause of house fires nationally. Two of every five house fires begin in the kitchen,” said
Edina Fire Marshal Jeff Siems. “It’s so easy to be distracted while cooking, but not paying attention while
cooking could be a recipe for disaster.
“It’s important for families to have a plan, and for children to practice safety in the kitchen.”
For the Edina Fire Department’s coloring contest, children are asked to color a picture of what their families
do to prevent kitchen fires. Things such as staying in the kitchen while cooking, turning off the burner if you
must leave the room, changing the batteries in smoke alarms, keeping flammables away from heat sources and
using baking soda -- not water -- on grease fires help prevent kitchen fires.
To enter the contest, pick up a coloring sheet at local business, Edina City Hall, the Edina Fire Department, or
download it from www.EdinaMN.gov/FPW. Entries are due by Oct. 31, and can be dropped off or mailed to
Edina Fire Department, Attn: Coloring Contest, 6250 Tracy Ave., Edina, MN 55436, or emailed to
mail@EdinaMN.gov, subject “EFD Contest.”
The first-place winner will get a ride to or from school on an Edina fire truck. The second place winner will
have a firefighter and fire truck visit his or her home. The third place winner will receive free passes to
Edinborough Park’s Adventure Peak.
“We look forward to all the ways Edina kids are preventing fires in their kitchens,” Siems said. “We also hope
this contest sparks a discussion among families about how to prevent fires, and what to do if there ever is a
fire.”
