FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City Uses New Processes For Snow Removal This Winter
Edina, Minn., Dec. 1, 2013 – The City of Edina Public Works Department has a new system for putting salt
on streets and is using GPS technology that helps increase efficiency.
The Public Works Department has an improved way for making brine that covers streets in inclement weather.
The old system, which consisted of a 600-gallon tank of the salt solution, wasn’t large enough to accommodate
all department vehicles. The new system makes a more authentic salt and holds it in a 5,000-gallon tank. The
new tank is large enough that the City can now salt roads before, during and after a storm.
Also, Public Works is using a new database populated by GPS tracking devices in all department vehicles. The
“Precise System” is a reporting system that shows where trucks are on routes at any given time, past or
present. This is especially useful for winter weather during which the City may want to make custom plow
routes. The system shows if a truck is ahead or behind schedule. The City is currently making a plan for
communicating with residents about weather advisories and plow activity.
Funding for the new components came from the Public Work’s budget, as well as a $25,000 grant from the
Nine Mile Creek Watershed District.
