These groups generally meet once a month on weekday evenings for one to two hours. The City of Edina recently joined the GreenSteps Cities program. The Commission and its working groups are implementing the GreenSteps Cities objectives on sustainability. Volunteers are needed for the following working groups: Education and Outreach – Creates public awareness and engages residents, schools, churches, businesses and civic organizations to take action to conserve and to increase energy efficiency, increase recycling and preserve and enhance the environment. Energy – Recommends best practices for energy conservation for Edina’s residents and businesses, including recommendations for a “green” building code, use of Energy Star appliances and other energy-reduction targets. Promotes the establishment of targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions produced by the City’s buildings, equipment and operations. Examines and promotes renewable energy options for transportation, heating and cooling, and other energy uses. Recommendations are also made for renewable energy sources such as wind, geothermal and solar power. Recycling and Solid Waste – Evaluates and monitors the provision of a residential recycling program. Evaluates and monitors the provision of a privately provided solid waste program, as well as a reduction in municipal solid waste produced by Edina residents and businesses. Water Quality – Evaluate and encourage improvements in surface water quality and in stormwater management. The Commission invites all Edina residents, including high school students, to join in working to make the City a model of sustainability.
