Edina Fire Receives Federal Grant For New Firefighting Gear
Edina, Minn., Feb. 22, 2012 – The Edina Fire Department was recently awarded a $74,520 federal grant
from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer said the grant money will be used to purchase 36 sets of firefighter turnout
gear. Each set of gear includes a jacket, pants, boots, helmet, hood and gloves.
The turnout gear, also known as structural firefighting personal protective equipment, is worn by firefighters
battling fires and meets all current standards set by the National Fire Protection Association. Each set of the
turnout gear costs about $2,300.
“The gear will protect our firefighters better during the extreme environments faced when fighting structure
fires,” Scheerer said.
The Edina Fire Department applied for the grant in 2011, which is part of FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters
Grant Program.
