FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Boerger Named New Commercial Vehicle Inspector
Edina, Minn., Jan. 31, 2012 – After attending two weeks of training and completing 32 Level-1 vehicle
inspections with the Minnesota State Patrol, Officer Keith Boerger is the new Commercial Vehicle
Inspector for the Edina Police Department. He started his new role Jan. 12.
Boerger is responsible for inspecting the presence and functionality of mechanical parts necessary to
ensure the safety of a commercial vehicle, as well as the condition of the driver.
Level-1 inspections include a review of the driver's licenses, medical examiner's certificate and waiver,
driver's record of duty status (as required), hours of service, seat belt use, vehicle inspection report, as
well as the brake system, coupling devices, exhaust system, frame, fuel system, turn signals, brake lamps,
tail lamps, head lamps, lamps on projecting loads, safe loading, steering mechanism, suspension, tires, van
and open-top trailer bodies, wheels and rims, windshield wipers and emergency exits. The inspector also
looks for signs of any alcohol or drug use by the driver.
Boerger is certified to inspect most commercial vehicles. To be eligible for a commercial inspection, the
vehicle must weigh at least 10,000 pounds and be used in commerce. Inspections are completed at
random and typically take about an hour to complete, depending on the number of violations.
Since joining the Edina Police Department as a Community Service Officer in 2000 and being sworn in as
a Police Officer in 2003, Boerger has been eager to fill this role. He notes that his experience assisting
the previous Commercial Vehicle Inspector, Officer Scott Thompson, laid the foundation for his interest
in the position.
“Keith has always taken an interest in traffic safety,” said Police Chief Jeff Long. “His hard work and
passion for traffic safety make him a perfect fit to fill this position.”
Boerger’s duties as Commercial Vehicle Inspector will remain an addition to his job as a Patrol Officer.
He says it’s just another way he’ll be able to keep the roadways in Edina safe.
