Smoke from Apartment Brings Out Fire Department
Edina, Minn., March 13, 2012 – Smoke and quick action by residents brought the Edina Fire Department
to an apartment fire in Edina.
At approximately 10:10 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, the Edina Fire Department was dispatched after receiving
reports of smoke from an apartment building in the 3100 block of Heritage Drive. Richfield and St. Louis Park
fire departments responded to a first alarm.
Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from the third floor of the 12-unit apartment building. The occupant
of the apartment was not home at the time and the building’s other residents evacuated safely. A cat from the
affected unit was rescued safely. Initial investigation shows the fire may have started in the kitchen.
“37 percent of all fires nationally start in the kitchen,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. “Always be sure
all appliances are turned off before leaving home.”
The fire was extinguished with short bursts of water and the unit was ventilated. Fire crews opened the
kitchen ceiling to make sure no hot spots were present. Other firefighters checked the roof for damage. The
unit below suffered minor water damage; however, the remaining 10 units are unscathed.
“If the building had a sprinkler system, the fire would have been better contained and caused minimal
damage,” Scheerer said. “Luckily, the fire was called in early and everyone got out safely.”
The exact cause of the fire is pending further investigation.
