FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina Police Department to Benefit Special Olympics-Minnesota
through Polar Bear Plunge
Edina, Minn., March 1, 2012 – Edina’s average temperature in early March hovers just above the freezing
point. For the intrepid members of the Edina Police Department, that’s perfect weather for a quick dip. On
Saturday, March 10, Edina officers will take part in a noon Polar Bear Plunge organized by regional law
enforcement to raise money for Special Olympics-Minnesota.
While the Police Department has participated in the Polar Bear Plunge before, “already this year we have
more ‘plungers’ on board than we have had in the previous years,” said Tony Martin, Lead Dispatcher.
EPD’s 2012 team name is “Spider Pigs.” Participants will congregate at Round Lake Park in Eden Prairie, where
waves of swimmers will jump into the frigid water throughout the early afternoon. The Eden Prairie Polar
Bear Plunge is one of 18 scheduled throughout the state. Last year, more than 11,000 participants raised
upwards of $2.2 million for Special Olympics-Minnesota. That funding helps support thousands of Special
Olympics athletes in a variety of competitions and activities.
