FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Edina, Bloomington and Richfield to Host Spring Vehicle Day
Edina, Minn., March 13, 2012 – The City of Edina relies on a wide assortment of motorized vehicles to
operate smoothly: from the fire trucks and police sedans that help keep us safe, to the garbage trucks and
commercial mowers that ensure Edina remains an attractive place to live. Rarely, though, has the public had
the chance to view these impressive machines up close – until now. On Saturday, April 28, area families are
invited to attend the inaugural “Vehicle Day” outside Southdale Center.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to noon in the parking lot next to Herberger’s, and is co-sponsored by the
cities of Bloomington, Edina and Richfield in conjunction with Simon Malls’ Kidgits Club.
“Most children are fascinated with the vehicles they see around town,” said Kristin Aarsvold, Recreation
Supervisor. “During imaginative play, kids enjoy being the garbage truck driver or the fireman. At this event,
they can actually take the driver’s seat for real.”
Drivers will be on hand to ensure safety and answer questions about the vehicles and their jobs. Children of
all ages are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult. Entry is free of charge.
On display will be ambulances, fire engines and squad cars from different suburbs, plus a host of more unusual
vehicles. Confirmed entrants include an armored car, a boom truck (used to reach telephone lines and tall
tree boughs), a log loader truck, plows, a utility tractor, vintage buses, and a wood chipper truck. A race car
and a T3 electric motorbike from Three Rivers Park District will also be on display.
Not all the attractions are on wheels, however. A representative from the sheriff’s office will be on hand with
a Hennepin County search-and-rescue boat. The local chapter of the Union of Operating Engineers will
contribute a backhoe simulator that will give kids a taste of construction work.
In addition, the Southdale Center Kidgits Club will inflate a jump house and bring in a face painter.
