The City Council approved a proclamation at its meeting April 3, which reads: “Whereas, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of individuals, societies and governments; and “Whereas, we, the people of the City of Edina, should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny; and “Whereas, we the people of the City of Edina should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of individual freedom in a just society; and “Whereas, the Days of Remembrance are set aside annually, occurring in April or May, to coincide with the national celebration of Yom Hashoah for the people of the City of Edina to remember the victims of the Holocaust, as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples; and “Whereas, pursuant to an Act of Congress, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates annually the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, including the Day of Remembrance known as Yom Hashoah. “Now, therefore be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Edina does hereby recognize the Days of Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of the City of Edina, will work to promote human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs.” In recognition of Days of Remembrance, special programming is airing on Edina Community Channel 16. On Tuesdays in April at 3 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., "I Was Given Life Twice," "Shadow of the Acropolis," and "Stolen Youth" are running back-to-back on EDINA 16. The three videos were produced by the Jewish Community Relations Council. On Fridays in April, a 2011 speech by Holocaust survivor Fred Baron will air at 3 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. For more information about the Edina City Council, visit www.EdinaMN.gov. -30-
