Edina City Council declares ‘Days of Remembrance’
Edina, Minn., April 9, 2012 – To honor the victims of the Holocaust and to continue its work to promote
human rights and relations, the Edina City Council has declared April 16-20 as “Days of Remembrance” in the
community.
The City Council approved a proclamation at its meeting April 3, which reads:
“Whereas, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the moral responsibilities of
individuals, societies and governments; and
“Whereas, we, the people of the City of Edina, should always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust
and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny; and
“Whereas, we the people of the City of Edina should actively rededicate ourselves to the principles of
individual freedom in a just society; and
“Whereas, the Days of Remembrance are set aside annually, occurring in April or May, to coincide with the
national celebration of Yom Hashoah for the people of the City of Edina to remember the victims of the
Holocaust, as well as to reflect on the need for respect of all peoples; and
“Whereas, pursuant to an Act of Congress, the United States Holocaust Memorial Council designates
annually the Days of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust, including the Day of Remembrance
known as Yom Hashoah.
“Now, therefore be it resolved that the City Council of the City of Edina does hereby recognize the Days of
Remembrance in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors as well as the
rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we, as citizens of the City of Edina, will work to promote
human dignity and confront hate whenever and wherever it occurs.”
In recognition of Days of Remembrance, special programming is airing on Edina Community Channel 16. On
Tuesdays in April at 3 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m., "I Was Given Life Twice," "Shadow of the Acropolis," and
"Stolen Youth" are running back-to-back on EDINA 16. The three videos were produced by the Jewish
Community Relations Council. On Fridays in April, a 2011 speech by Holocaust survivor Fred Baron will air at
3 a.m., 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
