While the issues are global, change begins on the local level. Edina’s Energy & Environment Commission suggests you do one or several of the following to protect our planet: 1. Save energy, money and the environment by taking the Edina Energy Challenge and scheduling a visit by the Home Energy Squad. 2. Sign up for Windsource through Xcel Energy to reduce greenhouse gases by supporting renewable energy. 3. Reduce, reuse and recycle. Replace disposable plastic bottles with a reusable water bottle. 4. Plant a tree and grow your own vegetables. 5. Drive less by combining trips and walking or biking where possible. Cut exhaust emissions by reducing engine idling. 6. Mulch your grass clippings and use organic fertilizers. 7. Turn off lights and electronics when not in use. Adjust your thermostat up in the summer and down in the winter. Install CFL light bulbs and buy Energy Star appliances. 8. Shop for produce at the Centennial Lakes Farmers Market, held 3-7 p.m. Thursdays from June 16 to Sept. 29. 9. Be a water smart consumer. Install low-flow shower heads and faucet aerators. Follow best practices in watering and mowing lawns. -more- City of Edina • 4801 W. 50th St. • Edina, MN 55424 10.
