Edina Human Rights & Relations Commission to Co-Sponsor
Discrimination by Design
Edina, Minn., March 27, 2012 - The Edina Human Rights & Relations Commission is proud to announce
the opening of Discrimination by Design, a month-long exhibit and programming series orchestrated by
Tolerance Minnesota, a branch of the Jewish Community Relations Council. The event will take place from
April 2 to May 11 on the University of Minnesota’s West Bank campus.
The centerpiece of this production is the Midwest tour of the acclaimed photo-documentary exhibit “Nazi
Persecution of Homosexuals.” On loan from the Holocaust Memorial Museum, the exhibit uses reproductions
of more than 250 photographs and documents to examine the impact of and rationale behind and Nazis’
persecution of homosexuals in German-occupied Europe before and during World War II.
The photo-documentary exhibit is on display in the first-floor atrium gallery of Elmer L. Andersen Library, 222
21st Ave. S., Minneapolis. Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Friday, and 8:30 a.m. to 6:45
p.m.Wednesday and Thursday. Docent-led tours are available upon request. Email ihrc@umn.edu to schedule
an appointment.
The Edina Human Rights & Relations Commission is one of seven organizations assisting the Jewish
Community Relations Council by co-sponsoring Discrimination by Design.
The assistance of these supporters was instrumental to the organizers’ ability to expand Discrimination by
Design with tie-in programming. This includes a Monday, April 23 lecture by noted legal scholar Dale
Carpenter, who will speak about his forthcoming book on the historic legal treatment of homosexuality in the
United States. The lecture will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and will include lunch. Email
cheree@minndakjcrc.org to learn more and to RSVP.
In addition, the University of Minnesota will host an educational film series on the topic of sexual orientation
and discriminative policies. For screening times and locations, visit http://bit.ly/GXM2C2.
