FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
With Severe Drought Warning In Effect, Residents Asked to
Conserve Water
Edina, Minn., Oct. 24, 2012 – In response to the severe drought warning issued by the State earlier this
month, the City of Edina is asking residents to do their part to conserve water.
The severe drought warning was issued Oct. 11. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has asked
water suppliers to reduce the pumping of their wells. Specifically, the City of Edina has been asked to reduce
pumping to 216 million gallons per month during the warning.
Because of the autumn season, City officials do not believe Edina will have a problem achieving the State’s
goal. In November 2011, for example, the City pumped 138 million gallons. However, City officials are still
encouraging residents and businesses to reduce their water use because if the warning continues into the
spring, the City may have to limit or prohibit outdoor sprinkling.
The City offers the following water conservation tips:
Check for toilet leaks – put a few drops of food coloring in your tank. If colored water shows in the
bowl without flushing, there is a leak and repairs are needed.
Fit showers with a flow restrictor or low-volume head to conserve water. Don’t turn on the shower
until you are ready to step in. Don’t leave water running while washing your face, shaving or brushing
your teeth.
Run your dishwasher only when you have a full load. Use the prewash, rinse-hold and scrub cycles of
your dishwasher only when necessary.
Run your washing machine only when you have a full load. Remember that in soft water, clothes get
cleaner and require less detergent and rinse water.
