Edina Fire Department Responds To Kitchen Fire
Edina, Minn., Oct. 23, 2012 – A fire in the 410 block of Monroe Avenue brought out the Edina Fire
Department on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., the Edina Fire Department was called to the home on Monroe Avenue on
reports of a kitchen fire. According to the caller, a paper bag was ignited when a child accidentally turned on
the burner of the gas stove. A woman and four children were home at the time and escaped without injury.
After the woman determined the kids were safe with a neighbor and had called 9-1-1, she attempted to
extinguish the fire from the back door with a garden hose, but the smoke was too thick.
Edina Firefighters used an Ara Safety Pro Fire Attack Tool, which, when activated, sprays a fire extinguishing
agent to help suppress and contain a fire. This is the first time this fire attack tool has been deployed in Edina.
“This device takes seconds to deploy and can really help knock down a fire,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty
Scheerer. “It helped us suppress the fire and keep it from spreading while the trucks and hoses were
deployed. It also means we use less water, which keeps the amount of water damage to a minimum.”
A second alarm was called, bringing in mutual aid from Hopkins and St. Louis Park. The fire was quickly put
out and crews checked for extension.
According to Fire Inspector Jeff Garfin, the home suffered from smoke damage and minor water and
structural damage. The cabinets, stove and refrigerator experienced the bulk of the damage.
“The family did the right thing here by evacuating and calling 9-1-1 from the neighbor’s house,” said Scheerer.
“Nearly 60 percent of fires begin on the stovetop. Always keep flammable materials away from cooktops.”
