FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Overnight Three-Alarm Duplex Fire Displaces Eight
Edina, Minn., Sept. 29, 2012 – An overnight fire caused extensive damage and displaced eight residents
from the two units of a duplex in the 7500 block of West Shore Drive.
Shortly before 3 a.m., the family of one unit was awakened by the smoke detectors sounding and called 9-1-1.
The Edina Fire Department was dispatched on reports of a car fire inside the garage of a duplex. Fire crews
arrived to find the garage fully involved and spreading to the house. The fire eventually reached three alarms.
Families from both units escaped without injury. No other injuries were reported; however, one resident was
treated and released on the scene for smoke inhalation.
“This shows the importance of having working smoke detectors in your home,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty
Scheerer. “Without smoke detectors to notify residents of the fire, this could have been a very different
situation.”
Once the fire was extinguished, crews worked for several additional hours to check for hot spots and
extension.
The American Red Cross was on the scene to assist the families.
The fire caused extensive damage to the duplex. The Hennepin County Fire Investigation team is working to
determine the precise cause of the fire.
