Public Art Committee announces People’s Choice Awards
Edina, Minn., Oct. 10, 2012 – “Oxymoron,” Bruce Stillman’s 12-foot, 9,000-pound kinetic sculpture won
first place in the People’s Choice Awards for the fourth-annual Edina Sculpture Exhibition organized by the
Edina Public Art Committee.
Stillman of Minnetrista, Minn., will receive a stipend of $1,000 for receiving the most votes from the public
since the outdoor exhibit opened in June. “Oxymoron” and the other two winning sculptures will be on
display for an additional year on the Edina Promenade near Centennial Lakes Park in Edina. “Oxymoron”
features four swinger steel pieces mounted on a granite base reminiscent of “the gravity we take for granted
moving with energy from the wind,” according to Stillman.
Receiving the People’s Choice second-place award was Heidi Hoy’s bronze sculpture, “Jack,” which depicts
the love of playing guitar. Hoy of St. Bonifacius, Minn., will receive $750. The third-place award was given for
“The Healing,” a sculpture made of natural rocks and stones created to fit the environment by Joel Carter,
Minneapolis. He will receive a $500 stipend.
Though the work of all three winners was on display on the Edina Promenade, the outdoor exhibit included
art at two other locations. Grandview Square Park had three sculptures on display, including two of the top
three People’s Choice winners from 2011. Three pieces were also on display in downtown Edina, thanks to a
new partnership with the 50th & France Business & Professional Association.
Each year, the Edina Public Art Committee sends a Request for Sculptures for the outdoor exhibit. The
Committee’s 2012 Request for Sculptures was sent to more than 200 artists, schools and arts organizations.
Nineteen proposals were sent to the committee for consideration and 11 sculptures were selected for
exhibit.
EPAC is a committee of the Edina Art Center and currently has nine members including one student member
from Edina High School.
