FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hometown Heroes: 12 Stories of Edina Veterans
Edina, Minn., Oct. 24, 2012 – Dwight Williams played on the grounds of the Edina Mill, attended Blake
School and then Harvard. He continued to distinguish himself in World War II, serving with the prestigious
Tenth Mountain Division, a hardy group of soldiers on skis who captured Riva Ridge.
Eric Craig Egge could have avoided the draft in an unpopular war because of a wrestling injury, but he
volunteered for Vietnam because he felt a patriotic duty.
These are just two of the stories of Edina young men killed in action that researcher Marshall Schwartz will
tell at a special program in honor of Veterans Day. The free public event will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday,
Nov. 14, at the Edina Senior Center.
Schwartz began his research project with the goal of identifying Edina residents killed in action so that their
names could be inscribed on the proposed Veterans Memorial at Utley Park. As time went on, he found their
stories so compelling that he compiled the biographies of the 32 young men in a self-published book.
The program is co-sponsored by the Edina Veterans Memorial Committee, the Edina Senior Center and the
Edina Historical Society. Light refreshments will be served.
Everyone is welcome to attend this short program honoring Edina's veterans who gave their lives in service to
their country.
