Overnight Blaze Damages Edina Home
Edina, Minn., Oct. 29, 2012 – At about 1 a.m. Monday, Oct. 29, the Edina Fire Department responded to a
structure fire in the 6900 block of Dakota Trail in southwest Edina.
The resident was roused by smoke alarms sounding in the home. The caller stated there was smoke in the
house from an unknown source, but no fire was seen. The single occupant escaped the home without injuries.
“Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a home fire in half,” said Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer. “It
is imperative to have working smoke alarms to alert you of a potential hazard, especially when sleeping. These
devices are life-saving – make sure they are in working order.”
When crews arrived, they found a fire in the attic space of the home’s mansard-style roof. A third alarm was
eventually requested, bringing mutual aid from Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Hennepin County EMS
and St. Louis Park. The fire was brought under control at about 2:40 a.m. Utilities to the home were cut as a
precaution. Crews continued to check for extension and hot spots until about 3:30 a.m. when all units were
cleared.
The interior and exterior of the home experienced moderate damage in the rear. The cause of the fire is
under investigation.
