FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
City to add temporary center tabs on Wooddale, remove signs
Edina, Minn., Nov. 1, 2012 – The City of Edina, which has been carefully monitoring activity along
Wooddale Avenue since advisory bike lanes were installed there in late September, will add temporary tabs
along the centerline of the roadway next week.
Advisory bike lanes are used on streets that are too narrow for dedicated bike lanes. Advisory bike lanes look
like dedicated bike lanes, except a dashed line is used in place of a solid bike lane stripe. A dashed line signals
to drivers that they may drive in the bike lane space when a bicyclist is not present. Advisory bike lanes do
not narrow the travel lanes or reduce the amount of roadway space that can be used by motor vehicles.
However, the Engineering Department has found that in some instances, drivers are not traveling in the
correct area of the roadway.
To assist in the learning process, Public Works crews will add temporary flexible reflective road tabs along
the centerline of Wooddale Avenue on Monday, Nov. 5. It is legal to cross over road tabs, so drivers should
continue to yield to bicyclists until it is safe to pass.
The tabs will be in place until they become dislodged. It is likely that they will be scraped off by snowplows.
The City does not plan to replace them in the spring.
Permanent centerline pavement markings such as paint marks cannot be used along Wooddale Avenue
because of federal requirements associated with travel volumes and roadway widths along advisory bike lanes.
In response to resident feedback, signs with bike route arrows and bike lane signs along Wooddale will be
removed on Nov. 5. The City’s consultant recently determined that the signage is not required along advisory
bike lanes. Other bike signage in the community will remain in place.
