The Edina Police Department offers crime prevention tips to help make the holiday season a safe and happy time. While Shopping  Park only in bright, busy lots or ramps. Good lighting and the presence of others will reduce your vulnerability.  Always lock your car and don’t leave anything visible on the seats or floor of the car. If you have something valuable in your car, lock it in the trunk before you arrive at your destination.  Walk tall with your head up and be aware of your surroundings. Look around you, not just straight ahead or at the ground.  While shopping, don’t leave your purse unattended. Take only the credit cards and cash that you’ll use that day.  Trust your instinct. If you’re uncomfortable, take action – go back into the building, find other people or contact security.  Have your keys in hand before you begin walking to your car. Before getting in, glance into the back seat. Once in your vehicle, lock the doors right away. At Home  Make sure all doors and windows are locked, including the door from the garage into the home.  Don’t display gifts where they can be seen from a window.  Be wary of strangers going door to door asking for charitable donations. Take time to research the organization if you’re interested in donating.  Turn a light and radio on when you leave your home, so it looks and sounds as if someone is there.  If you leave for vacation, place a light and radio on a timer. Have a neighbor drive in your driveway and pick up your mail and newspaper. “We want people to report any suspicious activity to 9-1-1 as soon as they see it,” said Crime Prevention Specialist Molly Anderson. “The eyes and ears of the public are an important part of effective crime prevention in our city.” For more information, visit www.EdinaMN.gov/police or call 952-826-1600. -30-
