City urges residents, businesses to participate in Earth Hour
Edina, Minn., March 22, 2011 – Edina City Hall will go dark for one hour Saturday, March 26, in
observance of Earth Hour.
Earth Hour started in 2007 in Sydney, Australia, when 2.2 million individuals and more than 2,000
businesses turned their lights off for one hour to take a stand against climate change. Earth Hour,
organized by WWF, has become a global sustainability movement with more than 50 million people
across 35 countries participating. This year, Earth Hour will be observed from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m.
CDT.
Safety lights and those in the Edina Police Department will remain on at Edina City Hall, but all
others will be turned off for the hour. Residents, schools, churches and businesses are encouraged
to turn off their lights during the hour, too.
In conjunction with the event, the Edina Art Center, 4701 W. 64th St., is selling recycled wine bottle
soy candles, handmade by Suzie Swenson of SKS Designs.
