Edina Fire Department receives grants
Edina, Minn., Feb. 24, 2011 – The Edina Fire Department recently received more than $120,000
in federal and state grant money to be used toward fire, emergency medical and special operations
training and equipment.
In January, the Department received $46,800 from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The
money will be used to purchase two new sets of hydraulic rescue tools (i.e. Jaws of Life). The new
equipment will provide a needed upgrade to the Department’s existing vehicle extrication tools.
“These new rescue tools will allow us to better cut and pry through the new high-strength metal
alloys being used in new car construction,” said Assistant Edina Fire Chief Darrell Todd.
Last year, Edina’s Paramedics responded to 180 automobile accidents in the City.
The Department also received $76,425 from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Division
of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, which will be used for planning, training and
equipment for the Department’s Special Operations Team (SOT).
Edina established its Special Operations program in 1998. Members of the SOT are
paramedic/firefighters trained and equipped to respond to many different types of technical rescues
such as rope, confined space trench/excavation, water, elevator and structural collapses. In addition
to serving the City of Edina, the SOT is also a member of Minnesota Task Force One, and can be
called to respond to statewide structural collapse emergencies.
